One of the most underrated horror films of the year is taking over the streaming charts. It may even have something to do with Netflix's upcoming Scooby-Dooprequel series.
Per FlixPatrol, Slanted starring Shirley Chen and incoming Scooby-Doo star McKenna Grace has officially claimed the number one spot on the list of the top streaming films currently available on Paramount+ in the United States. While Slanted still sits well below the top ten worldwide, the fact that it has overtaken streaming competition like Top Gun: Maverick and Primate is a surefire sign of its success.
Written and directed by Amy Wang, Slanted stars Shirley Chen as Joan Huang, a Chinese-American high school student who struggles with her appearance when she is unable to connect with her white peers. In the hopes of becoming prom queen, Joan does everything she can to play the part in as stereotypical a fashion as she can, all before being approached with the worst opportunity she could receive.
After being contacted by a clinic known as Ethnos, Joan undergoes a procedure that transforms her into McKenna Grace's Jo. Despite the immediate shift she feels at school, Jo's new identity soon gives way to some especially hard truths and equally stomach churning moments of overt body horror.
Upon its premiere at the South by Southwest Film and TV Festival, Slanted was met with largely positive reviews from critics. As of the time of writing, Slanted holds a 68% "Fresh" rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across 72 critical reviews of the film. This is almost identical to the response Slanted received from audiences, who helped the film garner a 66% "Popcornmeter" rating on the platform, as averaged across more than 50 user-submitted reviews.
Following the success of Slanted, McKenna Grace is set to take on an entirely different kind of horror with the release of Netflix's Scooby-Doo: Origins. Currently expected to arrive some time in 2027, Scooby-Doo: Origins will follow McKenna Grace's Daphne, Maxwell Jenkins' Fred, Tanner Hagen's Shaggy, and Abby Ryder Fortson's Velma as they enjoy their final Summer at Camp Ruby-Spears. Unfortunately, their Summer break is interrupted by a brutal murder, one which may have been witnessed by a literal pup named Scooby-Doo.
Alongside its leading cast, Scooby-Doo: Origins stars Paul Walter Hauser as Scooby-Doo's unnamed owner, as well as Roseanne and The Conners star Sara Gilbert in a still undisclosed role. Scooby-Doo: Origins will also feature the voice of franchise icon Frank Welker in yet another reprisal of Scooby-Doo himself.
Midnight Radio's Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners on Scooby-Doo: Origins, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman of Berlanti Productions, and André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson of Midnight Radio joining as executive producers on the series. Berlanti himself said of the series, "Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation."
Slanted is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
