SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT IS REPORTEDLY BACK: MORE ON NEW WWE TV SPECIALS

Our latest Rumor Roundup covered WrestleVotes’ report that WWE is set to announce a “live primetime special on NBC” that some within the company believed would take place this December on a Saturday night.

Even with only those few details, speculation immediately began about the return of Saturday Night’s Main Event, a series that aired on NBC late nights in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Saturday Night Live wasn’t running. Originally noteworthy as a rare instance of pro wrestling airing on a broadcast network, NBC also revived SNME for a few years in the aughts, airing its final episode in 2008.

And according to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that speculation is correct. Dave Meltzer writes that WWE sources told the Observer “that the return of Saturday Night’s Main Event will be announced very soon”, which WrestleVotes later confirmed as well. Furthermore, the WON says SNME was part of one of WWE’s recent media rights contracts: “The deal getting SmackDown on USA included four prime time specials per year on NBC”.

SmackDown moves to NBCUniversal-owned USA Network starting next Friday (Sept. 13). WWE’s deal with NBCU runs through 2029, so if the Observer’s report is right this December’s show could be the first of 20 Saturday Night’s Main Event episodes.
