The 2001 film "Legally Blonde" is a major Hollywood success story. It made $142 million worldwide off of a budget of $18 million, took Reese Witherspoon from "she seems familiar" levels of fame to true-blue movie stardom, and spawned two sequels and a stage musical. Also? It's more charming than it has any right to be.
The "Legally Blonde" universe is only continuing to grow, with an Amazon Prime series on the horizon. Witherspoon is not starring, which makes sense given the show is a prequel, but the show does have its Elle Woods now.
Witherspoon dropped the news on her Instagram, announcing that Lexi Minetree (which is very Pynchon, name wise) will be playing Elle on the show titled, fittingly, "Elle." While Minetree has had small roles on television before, this is a major step up for the young actor.
The official logline for "Elle" (which we gleaned from Variety and h/t to that publication for all the pertinent news here) states: “‘Elle’ follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first ‘Legally Blonde’ film.”
With the Minetree announcement out of the way, let us get to brass tacks. A "Legally Blonde" prequel series is a weird idea. The whole story of the film is that Elle Woods finagles her way into Harvard to study law. She also grows and changes in that process. What could possibly be there to tell from a story perspective about Elle Woods in high school?
Maybe the show will be fun. We were surprised by the original movie, after all. However, "Elle" does feel like a sweaty attempt to squeeze blood from the stone of intellectual property. Consider us in the "We'll believe it when we see it" frame of mind, especially with Minetree making a big leap to being a series lead.
