Angelina Jolie, known for roles in action staples like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Salt, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, is finally making her return to the action genre after five years away with her next role in the film Sunny.
The movie has already started production, as reported by Deadline, with Eva Sørhaug directing. Jolie is also signed on as a producer. Sunny is inspired by classic mafia movies, focusing on a female gangster, likely Jolie's character, going up against a drug kingpin to save herself and her family before it's too late.
Mark Fasano of Nickel City Pictures, one of the other producers on the film, called Jolie "a tour-de-force."
He praised her talent as he teased the project, saying, "People are going to be shocked by what she brings with this riveting character. This violent world that Eva and Angelina have crafted is grounded in survival and family led by a mother doing anything and everything within her power to protect her two boys.”
Nathan Klingher of Gramercy Park Media, who is another producer on Sunny, added, “Angelina has made this role uniquely her own. Strong, character-driven thrillers like this are rare, and the attention to detail that she and Eva have brought to the film is impressive to watch.”
Also producing is A Higher Standard’s Jeffrey Greenstein, in association with Choice Films, while Sørhaug is executive producing.

Sunny, which will likely hit theaters either late 2026 or sometime in 2027, will be Jolie's big return to the action genre after five years. Her last action film projects were 2021's Eternals and Those Who Wish Me Dead.
The former starred Jolie as Thena, a member of a powerful race of immortals called Eternals who protect the Earth from their enemies, the Deviants. Eternals is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although it's unknown if there are plans to bring the characters back in a future project.
In Those Who Wish Me Dead, Jolie played Hannah Faber, a smokejumper, or a firefighter trained to take on wildfires. After a traumatic experience on the job, Faber is stationed at a lookout tower for a break when she encounters a young boy on the run from killers and steps in to protect him.
Throughout her long acting career, Jolie has starred in an array of action roles, with a few other memorable movies including Gone in 60 Seconds, Wanted, and The Tourist.
