A new Doctor Who spinoff series is in the works. At San Diego Comic-Con, it was officially announced that the franchise will further expand with a new five-part series for Disney+ and BBC.
As announced at SDCC, the five-part spinoff will be called The War Between the Land and the Sea. It will include Doctor Who alums Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim. The new spinoff also stars Russell Tovey (Feud, American Horror Story: NYC) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Surface, Loki).
A lot of actors got started on Doctor Who, and plenty of them went on to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The spinoff is created by Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies, who also co-wrote the series with Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches, The Pact, Doctor Who). It's noted that the new series will feature the "triumphant return of the Sea Devils," the classic Doctor Who villains first seen in 1972. A description of the series reads, "When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war."
"Im so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast."
“I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast," Davies said of working on The War Between the Land and the Sea. "And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Whoniverse to its foundations. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.“
Doctor Who has extended its Queer representation throughout recent years but one fan-favorite seemed to disappear without any explanation.
Dylan Holmes-Williams, who directed the Doctor Show episodes "73 Yards" and "Dot and Bubble," is directing The War Between the Land and the Sea. Along with Davies, executive producers include Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter. The series is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC.
The main series is currently just past its first season featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. Gatwa will return in the role for an upcoming season due to arrive in 2025. With Davies returning to the franchise with Gatwa's first season, it was referred to as "Season 1" by the showrunner, hinting that this was the start of a new era for the long-running sci-fi television series.
Filming will start on The War Between the Land and the Sea next month, but a premiere date has not yet been set. The spinoff will air exclusively on Disney+ where available and BBC one and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.
