The last part of Community's "six seasons and a movie" promise remains unfulfilled as the long-gestating film is still on hold years after it was announced. One of the revered sitcom's top stars offers a mixed update on the movie's future, admitting that "tricky" schedules continue to prevent it from beginning production.
Speaking with Collider at the Sundance Film Festival, Community actor Alison Brie was asked about the movie's status and what the production will look like when cameras eventually roll. According to Brie, conflicting schedules remain the main issue, though there's "optimism" that the cast's availability will clear up later this year. "I don't know. Obviously, everybody's schedules are tricky, and maybe that's the main thing," she said. "But I maintain an optimism. I'm always hearing, 'Checking of avails.' So that's always a good thing. 'We're checking new avails for later in the year.'
With Community finally set to return in the form of a feature film, fans are clamoring for more details about the long-awaited project.
Brie portrayed Annie Edison, the kindhearted yet temperamental member of the show's core study group who was also the love interest of its main character, Jeff Winger (Joel McHale). Though she and her castmates have various commitments, Brie insists everyone involved is eager to make the film happen as soon as possible. "We all love each other so much. Everybody wants to do it. So, there's the willingness. I feel like that's the first step is all of us just being like, 'Let's get the gang back together!' So, your guess is as good as mine," she said.

Though show creator Dan Harmon completed the Community movie script some time ago, getting the film into production has been a tall task. While many of the show's cast are tied to other projects, the hold-up has mainly been tied to star Donald Glover, whose schedule has been filled with several projects and a music tour under his Childish Gambino persona. Glover defended himself from online backlash regarding his schedule allegedly holding up the film, with Harmon also denying the star was the reason for the delay.
Dave Franco and Alison Brie's new body horror film is a Sundance breakout hit with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.
Last spring, Brie confirmed that the script was done and that "it's so funny" as she believes the Community movie will bring a fitting conclusion to the story arcs carried over from the sitcom. Glover, who portrayed Winger's best friend Troy Barnes during the series, offered a tease about the film's plot, claiming it would be a college reunion that sees some characters, namely Danny Pudi's Abed, in top positions. Several other original cast members will appear in the film, including Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley Bennett), Gillian Jacobs (Britta Perry), Ken Jeong (Ben Chang) and Jim Rash (Craig Pelton).
Though production has yet to begin, the Community movie took a major step closer to happening after receiving a substantial tax credit from the California Film Commission. Should the film adaptation start shooting this year, it would come 10 years after the Community sitcom ended.
Fans can stream the Community series via Peacock.
