EWAN MCGREGOR'S FORGOTTEN BOX OFFICE BOMB FROM 2013 GETS NEW PRAISE FROM VFX ARTISTS

Ewan McGregor’s 2013 film Jack the Giant Slayer is garnering new praise from VFX artists more than 10 years after its release, according to a recent Screenrant article. The movie, which grossed $197 million at the box office, and had a budget of nearly $200 million, was recently broken down in a video by Corridor Crew. The film also starred Nicholas Hoult, who will portray Lex Luthor in the DCU.

Corridor Crew commended how authentic-looking the giants were. They noted that the monsters often moved at a slower pace, but the giants moved much more quickly, making them even more terrifying and entertaining for viewers. The video also spotlighted how the speed of the giants made them seem more real.

Here are some of the comments from the video:

"When they move quick, it's just way better. It's the same with zombies. When they stop being slow, they get way scarier. 65 giants, oh my God! That's so sick! Conceptually, these fast-moving giants are something I would like to see more of. It's an example of how fast someone of that scale can be."

"The fidelity of the texture work on the hands and the knees, it's like when it gets close, that detail is extreme, and that looks really, really good."

Ewan McGregor says there have been no discussions about a second outing for the popular Star Wars spin-off series.

Audiences and critics did not take a shine to Jack the Giant Slayer the way Corridor Crew did. The movie has a 52% Tomatometer score and a 55% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unlike the VFX artists of Corridor Crew, critics thought the movie overly emphasized digital effects and that the effects did not overcome the story. Critics also said the story was lacking in substance and was impersonal and forgettable, even with the strong performances from the cast. The 55% Popcornmeter Rotten Tomatoes score was only slightly higher for the darker “Jack and the Beanstalk” tale.

The Careers of the Cast Members Were Not Impacted

While the performance of the film was disappointing, the careers of the cast were not impacted. Many of the actors in the Jack the Giant Slayer cast were able to move past the box office bomb. Hoult, who is known as the young Hank McCoy/Beast from X-Men First Class came back to the Marvel universe for three more X-Men films. McGregor also found success after the movie in the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series, portraying the title character. Additionally, Ian McShane found success in all four John Wick films, portraying the character of Winston Scott. Bill Nighy went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for best actor in the 2022 film Living.

Jack the Giant Slayer is currently available to stream via Hoopla.
