Rocky Horror star Nell Campbell says the film helps generations accept their sexuality and find community
The cult classic musical “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is celebrating its 50th anniversary and actress Nell Campbell, who played Columbia, says the film continues to change lives. Reflecting on the film’s impact, Campbell told Entertainment Weekly that its staying power lies in how it’s helped generations “accept their sexuality” and find belonging through the film’s global “shadow cast” fan community. Calling those connections “magical,” Campbell noted that the movie has even brought people together who later “married, had children.” She said ‘Rocky Horror’ has offered a form of liberation for those raised in conservative environments, creating a space where self-expression and queerness are celebrated. “It still is hard for some people to come out about their sexuality,” she said. “And this film is a celebration of bisexuality, heterosexuality, homosexuality, transsexuality, and cross-dressing. It’s like, ‘Don’t dream it, be it.’”
