Guillermo del Toro’s 2015 gothic romance movie, Crimson Peak, has a new streaming home. As of Feb. 1, it is now available on Peacock.
Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Jim Beaver and Charlie Hunnam. Set in Victorian England, the movie follows budding author Edith Cushing (Wasikowska) as she visits a remote Gothic mansion with her new husband (Hiddleston) and his sister (Chastain). Once there, Edith finds herself haunted by ghostly visions and soon realizes there is more to her new romance than meets the eye.
Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx starred in a 2013 political thriller film about an attack on the White House, and the film is now streaming for free.
Crimson Peak was directed by del Toro, who also wrote the script with Matthew Robbins (Batteries Not Included). The gothic film was described as being inspired by iconic horror films, including Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and Jack Clayton’s The Innocents. Del Toro himself called the film a “classical gothic romance ghost story”.
Hiddleston, who is known for playing Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wasn't del Toro's original choice for the film -- another MCU veteran, Benedict Cumberbatch, was originally attached to the role. Emma Stone was also originally cast in Wasikowska's role before both she and Cumberbatch dropped out of the production.
After its release, Crimson Peak made $74.7 million at the box office against its $55 million budget. Despite positive reviews, the film suffered due to its release schedule, being pitted against films including The Martian and Bridge of Spies, which both managed to pull in larger audiences at the time. Critics praised the film for subverting genre expectations and for its stunning visuals. It maintains a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although audience opinion is a bit more mixed; only 56% of the site’s 25,000+ audience ratings are positive.
In Crimson Peak, Charlie Hunnam played Dr. Alan McMichael, Edith’s childhood friend who learns a dark secret about her new husband and heads to the gothic manor to try and warn her. Hunnam’s role in the film is very different from what most people know him for: playing Jax Teller in the FX drama Sons of Anarchy.
The Wayans Brothers' controversial cop comedy from the 2000s is now streaming for free.
Hunnam played Jax in all 92 episodes of the series, which follows the adventures of the close-knit family of motorcyclists in a fictional town in California’s Central Valley. The series also starred Katey Sagal, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan and Kim Coates. The critically acclaimed series won numerous awards over its six-year run, including a Golden Globe Award for Sagal. Hunnam was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Television Award for his role in the series in 2015.
Crimson Peak is now streaming on Peacock.
