OFFICIAL MICKEY 17 TRAILER GOES HEAVY ON DEATHS, LIGHT ON TONE

  • Mickey 17 trailer showcases Robert Pattinson in the gruesome but comedic story.
  • Movie adaptation is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton.
  • The premise involves the protagonist being cloned repeatedly after dying.

The much-anticipated first official trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 officially launched on Tuesday night. The video offers as many crazy deaths as fans of the South Korean director should have expected, paired with a fun and lighthearted tone.

Before the action got rolling in the new trailer, which goes far more in-depth into what the latest science fiction flick will entail, there are several shots of Robert Pattinson in the lead roll. The actor, who these days might be better known as the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ Batman series, has branched out in Mickey 17 as a completely different kind of hero.

Steven Yeun joins Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Naomi Ackie in Bong Joon Ho's sci-fi thriller adaptation of Mickey7.

The just-released trailer shows Pattinson as Mickey, a man who has volunteered for a very special job that sees him repeatedly killed off in various ways. The upside, in Joon-ho’s latest project is that when Mickey dies in the many ways shown off in the video, he’s cloned and brought back with most of his memories intact.

Mickey 17 Offers Lighthearted But Deadly Science Fiction Action

Mickey 17 is based the famous science fiction novel by Edward Ashton, Mickey7. Should the movie stick to that plot line, degree of difficulty when it comes to Pattinson’s character constantly dying and coming back, is that he’s the employee of a colony that does not have unlimited resources. This makes bringing Mickey back repeatedly a real concern for everyone trying to survive on the ice world of Niflheim.

As the trailer demonstrates, the real twist comes when a mistake is made - possibly made by Mickey’s bosses who mistakenly think he’s died again - and one of the clones is awakened and the two men come face-to-face. How exactly the pair of versions of the same person find a way to coexist on a world where there is only supposed to be one is a central part of the movie’s plot.

Adding to the lighthearted nature of the first Mickey 17 trailer is a star-studded cast that appears to be giving over-the-top performances, including The Avengers’ Mark Ruffalo as one of the colony's higher-ups, Toni Collette, The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, and assorted monsters and creatures from the alien planet.

It was previously announced that Ruffalo will play Hieronymous Marshall, Mickey 17’s main antagonist. Marshall has been against the cloning project from the very beginning. In the book, his cost-cutting ways lead to the mix-up that creates one too many copies of Pattinson’s character to exist. Yeun takes on the part of Berto, a pilot for the colony who is essentially all the Mickeys’ handler, contact person, and friend. Collette plays Gwen, a matronly figure to Mickey, who heads up the Expendables program that handles the cloning of these types of works and is the one who recruited Mickey for this highly hazardous job.

The just-released trailer also brought the film's new official release date. It was initially expected to hit theaters earlier this year but was pushed back for various reasons. Its new release date has the next Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon-Ho project arriving just after the new year.

Mickey 17 is scheduled for release on January 31, 2025.
