Acclaimed filmmaker and Megalopolis director Francis Ford Coppola sues Variety for libel in response to an article outlining misbehavior on set.

Directed by Henry Selick from a screenplay by Caroline Thompson, which itself was based on a story and characters created by Tim Burton in 1982 and adapted by Michael McDowell, The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993 and immediately became a pop culture sensation unto itself. The story follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, as he discovers doors to other holidays and steps into the world of Christmas Town. This drives Jack to gleefully take over Christmas for himself, leading to all manner of holiday-themed horrors being unleashed upon an unsuspecting populace, as well as a personal crisis for the Pumpkin King himself.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Joins the Beetlejuice Sequel on the Big Screen

During his press tour ahead of the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton discussed whether films such as 1989's original Beetlejuice or The Nightmare Before Christmas might be considered gateway horrors through which young fans can build an appreciation for the genre. "Well, yes and no," Burton said. "Some kids can watch this stuff, some kids can't. You could, I could, others can't, my daughter can't. The point is, I never felt like I knew exactly, I just know myself, and I know how I felt as a child and all that sort of thing. I always feel parents get more worried about their kids, and kids can handle more than the parents think they can handle."

Burton has also addressed whether any of his other films will be receiving the sequel treatment after the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. "No. In fact, I think I would say the opposite, in a funny way, because I've done that a little bit," Burton explained. He went on to note that he very nearly retired from film making after his experience on 2019's Dumbo and the way he felt about "the whole studio thing," before adding, "So, I went off and did a TV thing — Wednesday in Romania — just to kind of re-cleanse, so to speak, or re-energize... I had no burning desire to make the sequel or anything, I just wanted to make this movie. So, I think I've recalibrated the way I'm gonna approach things in the future."

The Nightmare Before Christmas will be in theaters beginning October 11.
