Oh My Goth! These 13 Movies Get the Misunderstood Subculture
The goth subculture is more than just wearing a lot of black clothing and embracing every day like it’s Halloween. Although many movies that depict the goth scene only focus on superficial characteristics, a few manage to capture the essence of the counterculture and why it appeals to outsiders of all ages. Goth, short for gothic (with a lowercase “g”), started in the U.K. in the late 1970s and early ’80s as an offshoot of the punk scene. People with a predilection for black attire listened to bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, the Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, and Bauhaus at clubs such as London’s Batcave. Over the decades, goth has evolved into different subscenes and newer music artists such as Zola Jesus have taken the torch, but the core interest in dark romanticism, Edgar Allan Poe, Anne Rice, old folklore, superstition, horror movies, the supernatural, and the macabre remains the same. Any elder goth will tell you that there are a few select movies on every goth’s must-watch list, and many of them have enjoyed crossover success with mainstream audiences. Here are 13 lucky goth-friendly films that fans of the genre have made cult favorites.
