NETFLIX REVEALS NEW SAILOR MOON COSMOS TRAILER AHEAD OF WORLDWIDE AUGUST RELEASE

Sailor Moon Cosmos, the newest anime iteration in the Sailor Moon franchise, has received a new trailer ahead of its worldwide release on Netflix in August. The streaming service is set to bring the movie to its platform on Aug. 22, 2024 -- the first time the film has streamed internationally.

Netflix has licensed both Part 1 and Part 2 of Sailor Moon Cosmos, which was initially released theatrically in Japan on June 9 and June 30, 2023, respectively. The new trailer, seen below and revealed by Netflix on July 25, depicts the titular heroine and the Sailor Guardians, along with allies like Tuxedo Mask, in their fight against the power-hungry Sailor Galaxia, who aims to conquer Earth and rule the galaxy. The trailer notably features the likes of Chibi Chibi and Princess Kakyuu, as well as giving ample screen time to the Sailor Starlights: Sailor Star Fighter (Seiya), Sailor Star Maker (Taiki), and Sailor Star Healer (Yaten).

Sailor Moon Cosmos' New Netflix Trailer Reveals the Anime's "Final Chapter"

Animated by Toei Animation and Studio Deen, the two-part Sailor Moon Cosmos movie serves as an immediate sequel to the film Sailor Moon Eternal, overall part of the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot series -- a more faithful adaptation of the original manga than the anime released by Toei between 1992-1997. Cosmos is directed by Tomoya Takahashi, with the screenplay written by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Black Clover) and music by Yasuharu Takanashi (Naruto, Fairy Tail, Reincarnated as a Sword). The core cast members of Sailor Moon Crystal and Eternal all reprise their former roles. Original Sailor Moon manga author and illustrator Naoko Takeuchi serves as the movie’s chief supervisor.

Sailor Moon's Reboot Anime Is a More Faithful Version of Naoko Takeuchi's Original Manga

Sailor Moon Cosmos is in good company on Netflix; the streaming service is currently also home to all three seasons of reboot anime series Sailor Moon Crystal and both parts of the follow-up movie, Sailor Moon Eternal. While Crystal and its film sequels are in some ways markedly different from the initial '90s anime, which is still remembered extremely fondly by numerous fans, it has also been praised by many for stripping away the non-canon filler so prevalent in the first anime series, as well as for giving far more development to main characters like Tuxedo Mask. Needless to say, it also updates the visuals for a more modern audience, whose '90s iteration sometimes suffered from highly inconsistent character models and low-quality animation even for its time.
