The new Dexter sequel is moving up its gears, as the prequel series has ended its roller-coaster ride of a first season. Dexter: Resurrection begins where New Blood left off, with the former Bay Harbor Butcher on the verge of death, only to be saved in the opening of Dexter: Original Sin.
Currently, details about Resurrection remain limited, though what is known is that Michael C. Hall will return, and the new cast members will include Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage, among other returning characters from the original series and New Blood. Now other cast members have been announced - and with them some character details which hint at and what fans will see in the new series.
Dexter: Original Sin has been making waves with the Dexter fan base. Here's when the finale episode is set to air.
For fans of both New Blood and the original show, there will have recognizable characters. Unlike Iron Lake, Resurrection will have plenty of familiar faces. David Zayas and James Remar will be reprising their roles as Angel Batista and the late Harry Morgan. Also, Jack Alcott will return as grown-up Harrison from New Blood.
Previously announced new cast members also include Uma Thurman, who will play a mysterious billionaire's head of security, and Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage has been cast as the series "big bad," the billionaire Leon Prater. Deadline has confirmed four new castings, whose actors hail from shows across networks. These four new names for the show are Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (The Lincoln Lawyer), Kadia Saraf (Law & Order: SVU), Dominic Fumusa (Nurse Jackie) and Emilia Suárez.
The report stated, "Mwine will play the role of Blessing Kamara, a rideshare driver who radiates unwavering optimism and a man devoted to his family and community. Saraf will play Detective Claudette Wallace, a razor-sharp investigator known for her methodical precision and unrelenting focus. Fumusa will play Detective Melvin Oliva, Claudette Wallace’s partner at NYPD who is the only one that understands his quirky partner. Suárez will play Elsa Rivera, Harrison Morgan’s vibrant and determined friend and co-worker at the Empire Hotel."
Whilst the casting gives way to nothing about the plot, this does seem to confirm a set location for the series - New York City. It seems that the titular character won’t be leaving the state following his trip to Iron Lake Hospital.
The Dexter series is about to become a little more complex with two shows already completed, and two more on the way.
The original series, which started in 2007 and finished in 2013, loosely followed the novels of Jeff Lindsey, telling the story of a Miami-based serial killer and blood spatter analyst, Dexter Morgan. Dexter was a serial killer with a code, as he only killed people who deserved it from a moral point of view. Over eight seasons, he took out serial killers, corrupt politicians, his own brother and Barney’s dad from How I Met Your Mother (that killer is also getting a prequel).
The series ended with Dexter losing his sister Deb, and so he seemingly dies by suicide. It's later revealed he survived and lived peacefully in Iron Lake, New York. Until one day, he kills a guy and his son, Harrison tracks him down, which begins a series of events that would seemingly culminate in Dexter’s ultimate demise.
Not so ultimate it seemed, as in the opening of Dexter: Original Sin, the character’s death is retconned, much to the happiness of fans who felt the Bay Harbor Butcher deserved better as a final outing. However, some fans say New Blood wasn’t the worst season for Michael C. Hall’s character, even if it left many unsatisfied with the ending. Dexter: Resurrection looks to be set to amend that, and it’s brought in some big names to do it.
Dexter: Resurrection will release in Summer 2025. Dexter and Dexter: Original Sin are available to stream on Paramount+.
